Inclusive classroom at 12th Avenue laying the foundations for an inclusive community
Monday November 14, 2011 — Ryan Rogers
The 12th Avenue Out-of-School Care Centre is not only applying the fundamental elements for an inclusive classroom, but it’s yielding results from children as young as five years of age.
Supervisor Moira Stubbs says the inclusive classroom supported by the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) is creating an environment where all children are supportive of people who have a disability.
One five-year-old girl is making a difference for one of the people the BACI supports and is setting a strong example to the rest of her class.
“She’s setting a great example — she’s one of our youngest, so good for her to set the bar,” says Moira.
“If other kids see her playing with him, it shows them they’re more than capable of doing the same thing.”
Before the girl began interacting with the boy who has autism, Moira says he would stick to himself and only play with certain toys or spend his time in the quiet room, a separate area with a couch and television.
“He would interact with staff a lot, but we didn’t notice him interacting with other children,” says Moira, adding she was pleased to see the young girl engaging him in play and conversation.
The girl began by saying “Hi” and sharing toys with him, Moira says.
“She’s just a very caring little girl and she loves him, so she wanted to go and play with him,” adds Moira.
It’s setting a good example in the classroom.
“It’s nice to see because the other kids can see what’s going on and maybe the other kids will want to join in,” says Moira.
Moira says the all the students are “doing a really great job” opening lines of communication and creating a caring and inclusive environment at daycare.
