Outreach worker thrilled with improved accommodations
Wednesday, March 16, 2011 — Ryan Rogers
In only six months 62-year-old Danny Vollans was able to change his life for the better. Collaboration amongst team members at the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) and other agencies also played a part in this success.
Outreach worker Tony Matijiw was referred to work with Danny in August 2009.
“In a nutshell he was in a really substandard living arrangement,” says Tony. “(Danny) was isolated, unemployed, with no identification papers, and was spending most of his money on rent, affecting his nutrition.”
Danny had been making efforts to improve his situation, and with support from BACI and other organizations he found a new home.
Now Danny is living in a subsidized apartment where he has a part-time job shovelling the front entrance after it snows.
A family donated furniture to Danny’s apartment and he’s socially connected with his many neighbours.
Danny’s progress began at the New Leaf Clubhouse (NLC), a clubhouse for people with mental illnesses, where one of the workers referred a health nurse to evaluate his circumstances.
The nurse connected Danny to Community Living British Columbia (CLBC), who connected him with BACI.
Danny says he’s much happier in his new home.
“It’s 100 per cent better in my new place, and I’ve got good friends around,” he says.
Danny volunteers at the NLC where he sweeps and mops each Thursday, and he’s looking forward to the summer when he pitches for the NLC softball team.
Danny says he’s developed a strong relationship with Tony.
“We get along real good,” he says. “He’s always there when I need him.”
