A summer of activities at South Slope Out of School Care Centre

With Labour Day weekend but a blink away, the team of childcare workers at the South Slope Out of School Care Centre are winding down after a busy summer filled with a range of activities and day outings.

There are 19 children registered at the centre but with families taking vacations and parents having more time to spend with their children in the summer months, supervisor Aman Mangat says the centre has been a little light on numbers.

This gives the workers even more time to spend nurturing the curious minds of the children they serve, Aman says, and the various day trips they were able to take were certainly memorable for the small group.

“With 15 or 16 children in our program, we were able to take them out and about in the city,” explains Aman as she looks back at a summer that seems to have flown by.

Between Splashdown water park, Playland Amusement Park and a trip to Grouse Mountain overlooking the City of Vancouver, there was plenty to keep everyone busy.

Aman says the amusement park stands out as especially memorable.

“All of the children were really excited about it and it was just a long, fun-packed day and everyone really enjoyed themselves,” she says.

“It was one of the children’s favourite outings.”

It’s been Aman’s experience that nothing fosters the concept of inclusion better than children of different ages, ethnicities and abilities having fun together in a shared activity outside of the daily routine.

In playing together in an inclusive environment that feeds curiosity, experimentation and the exploration of the world around them, children of all abilities are able to realize that everyone has unique gifts and abilities.

This is something these day trips are able to offer.

“It’s just really nice to see big smiles on their faces when they’re really enjoying something, being a part of it all and just being with their friends,” Aman says.

She says those smiles are one of the greatest rewards she experiences working with the children.
