Awards celebrate and inspire inclusion through innovation

Last year’s inaugural Inclusion through Innovation Awards lit a spark, with many people supported by the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) excited for the recognition program and expressing great ideas on who should be celebrated.

It’s hoped this enthusiasm and support will continue and grow as the Sharing Our Future Foundation now welcomes submissions for the 2012 awards.

“It was exciting to see the way people who are involved with BACI got behind it,” foundation board chair Nicole Mangan says, citing one resonating aspect of the awards program.

With the nomination process open to anyone and the scope of the awards broadened this year to include nominees in Metro Vancouver, Nicole says “we’d be excited to see lots and lots of nominations” this year.

BACI co-executive director Tanya Sather also hopes for a plethora of nominations.

She says down the road it would be great see more and more innovations that advance inclusion as individuals and organizations are inspired to vie for the spotlight these awards bring.

One individual and one organization will be honoured with an Inclusion through Innovation Award, but the program is also intended to highlight the vast and multiple ways that are helping to create more accessible and inclusive communities.

Nicole says that celebrating this creativity will hopefully shed light on what’s possible in the community as well as inspire more people and organizations to get involved.

“If we share information on the ideas that people have, we’re hoping that that results in other people saying, ‘I could do something like that,’ and maybe prompt talking to that organization about how they brought that (idea to life),” Nicole says.

To be eligible for the award, individuals must live, work or participate in initiatives in Metro Vancouver. Organizational nominees can include non-profit organizations, public or private corporations, groups or service clubs, educational institutions, professional and trade associations, unions, municipalities and their departments, and government departments.

Completed nomination packages must be submitted by Dec. 21. The Sharing Our Future Foundation board will assess nominees based on their impact, scope and method, and present the two recipients with an acknowledgement award at a special reception on Feb. 21, 2013.
