Families invited to June 20 discussion on future of the sector
Thursday May 31, 2012 — Michelle Strutzenberger

More than two years ago, Community Living B.C. introduced an initiative that saw self-advocates interviewing other self-advocates about their quality of life.

“The result of this process was amazing,” reports Community Living B.C. project manager of the initiative Andrea Baker in an introductory video on the effort.

“We learned so much.”

A series of companion videos capturing the essence of the self-advocates’ findings has since been published.

Community Living B.C. is now engaging families and other organizations to consider these findings. They are looking to have a conversation about what the self-advocates discovered that could be considered in new and future work around working with people who have an intellectual disability.

The Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI) is also joining this effort.

BACI executive director Richard Faucher has been directly engaged, hosting conversations with several groups of families to date.

An event June 20 is another opportunity[1] for BACI families to add their voice to the dialogue.

Families are invited to the BACI Still Creek Centre for dinner and discussion where they can provide their thoughts on the future of the developmental services sector, within the context of this quality of life framework.

At the heart of this work, is an understanding that quality of life is multi-dimensional and most significantly includes, in some way, a measurement of social participation, well-being and independence.

For more information, visit the Community Living B.C. website[2].

More stories on this will also be published to the BACI Blast.
