Summer staff appreciation party draws team together
Tuesday August 28, 2012 — Kristian Partington

The Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion’s steady push towards a Lower Mainland that’s more inclusive of people who have a disability is only possible because of the strength of an entire team of dedicated professionals.

They come to work every day living and breathing a philosophy that embraces equality for all community members, regardless of ability, and the staff appreciation party held at the Scandinavian Community Centre in Burnaby on Aug. 24, is just one way to recognize the power of this team.

Traditionally, staff appreciation was tied into the annual Christmas party, but senior manager of community and housing development Karey DeGenova says the Wellness Committee, of which she is a part, saw the need to have a separate event focused entirely on the staff.

“The wellness committee decided that it would be nice if we had the appreciation dinner as a separate event, giving staff another opportunity to get together, party and feel that their caring work is recognized,” Karey explains.

Together with the Life Sharing group, members of the wellness committee organized the party, which recognized nearly 100 team members for between five and 30 years of dedication to the inclusion movement through BACI.

“Events such as this one give them opportunities to relax and hopefully feel that the work that they do is valued, that they make a difference and that the difference they make is noticed,” says Karey.

The festivities tie directly in with the organization’s promise through its strategic plan to ensure a healthy and appreciated work force is nurtured, she adds.

There was good food, music and entertainment, volleyball, bocce ball and badminton, and Karey says she couldn’t have asked for a better day to honour the work of the entire BACI team.

“We were very fortunate to have a beautiful evening,” she says. “It was a wonderful event.”

She hopes word will spread inspiring more people to attend when the team gathers again next summer.
