Extraordinary work springing from an extraordinary culture

“In Canada and around the world, artists and performers with disabilities are contributing to one of the most radical and effective aspects of disability culture – challenging conventional notions of beauty, form and motion.” -Catherine Frazee, Professor of Distinction, School of Disability Studies & Co-Director, Ryerson RBC Institute for Disability Studies

What is Kickstart?

We’re Kickstart Disability Arts & Culture, a not-for-profit organization based in Vancouver, Canada. We present and produce work by artists with disabilities, and promote artistic excellence among artists working in all disciplines.

We believe in the power of art. We believe in the power of moments that “shine”; moments of hilarity, of sadness of beauty; moments that make you feel profoundly human. We believe in the power of art to promote social change.

Kickstart was the first to take up the challenge of creating a disability arts movement in Canada. Since 1998, we’ve developed an international reputation for bringing ground-breaking work to enthusiastic audiences. Our projects have included: visual art exhibits, creation of new dance works, public forums, the Swamp Angels Choir, and our signature Kickstart Festival – featuring artists from around the globe performing theatre, music, dance and comedy.

We want to make the arts more accessible to everyone in our communities. EarSighted is Canada’s first service to provide Audio Description for live theatre to visually impaired audiences. We work to inspire and support local artists by offering workshops in visual art, theatre, writing, dance and digital storytelling – and by connecting artists with one another. If you’d like to know more or to become a member, give us a call, drop us an email or visit our website.
