Pull 10-12 names out of a hat and invite their bearers to have lunch together — no agenda. Just good food, paid for, and ideally lots of good conversation. How’s that for a community-building idea?
This is what’s just launched at the Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion (BACI).
It’s the brainchild of residential supervisor John Woods, and was sparked during a recent gathering of BACI staff members who meet regularly to consider ideas for change within BACI and beyond.
John says the intention in what’s being called a lunch lottery is to create the space for people from all parts of BACI, both staff and managers, as well as persons served, to meet informally.
“I think the best-case scenario is that it makes for a more cohesive BACI family,” he says.
“People will get to know each other across the association; they will be less strangers with one another across the departments.”
Icing on the cake would be if the mix of unlikely people generates some “really amazing ideas” to help realize this community’s overall intention to create a more inclusive society in different ways.
John says he could see that happening, in fact.
He knows there are staff members who have lots of other commitments and find it difficult to join more formal initiatives like Ideas for Change, but have really good ideas for how to do things differently.
Perhaps they will begin to see this lunch as a place to share some of those ideas and design ways to work together with both their colleagues and persons served to make them a reality.
Each month, the names of several persons served and up to 10 staff from throughout BACI will be selected by lottery to meet for lunch on the last Friday of the month. Those whose names are pulled will be contacted by John to see if they’re interested in participating in this voluntary get-together.
Lunch will be held 1 to 3 p.m. at a local Burnaby restaurant. To ensure all BACI staff members have access to this opportunity, some breakfast lotteries will be held as well.
