10 Steps to Becoming an Advocate

  • Volunteer. You can participate in groups, sit on boards, do public education. Investigate ways to volunteer and learn in your community.
  • Get an education. There are many ways to learn: courses, Kudoz, forums, public meetings, the internet, and community groups.
  • Find people who inspire you. Ask questions, watch how they work and learn from their experience.
  • Learn about something you are passionate about. You can’t be an expert on everything. Find at least one thing that you really care about and become an expert.
  • Be a problem solver. Look at your issue from all angles. Ask lots of questions; know how to find resources and information.
  • Be positive. You are advocating because something needs changing. It’s important to stay positive — both for you and the people you encounter. Communicate in ways that make you and other people feel that change is possible.  Create a “Win-Win” situation.
  • Listen. Learn to genuinely listen to others’ point of view and be open to understanding all ideas.
  • Be patient. Change is often slow. Work hard, enjoy the journey and be patient.
  • Don’t quit!
  • Take care of yourself and get lots of support. You can’t do it alone!
