The Burnaby Association for Community Inclusion’s (BACI’s) annual fundraising gala has raised considerable funds over the years to support a number of critical early intervention supports for children, and key to this success have been the directors of a supporting foundation.
The Sharing Our Future Foundation is dedicated to supporting BACI’s strategic goals, traditionally as a fundraising body, but evolving in recent years to provide various other supports.
With the annual fundraising gala in particular, known as the BACI Ball, the directors have shown incredible passion and commitment to ensuring its success, says senior manager of communications and resource development Carol Broomhall.
“Not only has the foundation produced a wonderful event but the directors have been key to the success in terms of the tickets they have been able to sell to the event and the fabulous prizes that they have encouraged others in the community to donate to our silent and live auctions,” says Carol.
They also provide feedback on planning and in all of this bring a compassionate understanding of the importance of BACI’s work, adds co-executive director Tanya Sather.
Funds raised through the BACI Ball are directed to a number of programs, including infant physiotherapy.
Carol notes this program can be critical to a child’s thriving, for instance, in the case of those with a conditions like torticollis and plagiocephaly (flat head). Without intervention, these conditions can lead to developmental delays later on in life. But if families are able to access the program, it’s been shown to be correctable, enabling typical development.
Nicole Mangan is current chair of the Sharing Our Future Foundation.
She notes when it comes to supporting an organization, one wants a place that’s “doing all the right things, and is very progressive” — and she’s found all that in BACI.
“I find BACI to be a very committed and refreshing organization,” she says, reflecting on her now four-year commitment to the foundation.
“They’re very well organized; they’re very committed people and they are very dedicated to the people they support. It’s obvious that the people they support are happy and enjoy being around the people at BACI.”
The Sharing Our Future Foundation is comprised of a group of volunteers representing the business community, from real estate to law and including retired business professionals with connections to various business networks.
Developed as a traditional fundraising body, it’s evolved over the years and proven itself a significant source of support in other ways, from helping with business development ideas to making connections to the greater business community.
“They’re a wonderful, wonderful group and have been generous and supportive over the years,” says Tanya, noting the diverse backgrounds represented means the support they provide the BACI community is very rich.
