May is Child Care Month!

by Carol Broomhall | May 5, 2017 6:05 pm

In May, we celebrate the vital work and dedication of the Early Childhood Educators in BC — particularly those in BACI’s 4 child care and out of school care centres! Children are our hope for a better future, and what they learn in these important early years will have an impact on us all.

Some experts believe that 80% of our essential life skills are learned before age 6. These shape our core values and beliefs about how we treat others and how we view ourselves.

So this month, we recognize the importance of child care to families, and honour the Early Childhood Educators who provide young children a caring and safe place where they can create, explore and learn.

$60,000 for 60 years ~ BACI Reaches Fundraising Goal

by Carol Broomhall | April 1, 2017 4:35 pm

In BACI’s 60th Anniversary year, our goal was to raise $60,000 ($1,000 per year!) for BACI’s Children’s Services[1] — including our Infant Development Program[2]. We are very pleased to say we met that goal!

Thanks to all of our BACI members, staff, Board and community friends who contributed in many ways — participating in our fabulous Online Auction, our WestJet ticket raffle, or by donating directly to help children of all abilities flourish and grow.

Join us in making the next 60 years even better than the last!

More Than 60 Days of Giving…

by Carol Broomhall | September 26, 2016 9:00 pm

Although BACI’s official 60 Days of Giving Campaign ended on April 22 — with our Spring Clean for Earth Day event — the stories of giving continue. One of our Day Services staff, Jill Rowan, recently met a fellow at Four Shores Park. He has Multiple Sclerosis and was parking in the handicap spots at the park, but didn’t have a proper parking pass. He was being harassed by a few vigilant people in the area and was feeling increasingly upset and isolated.Jill encouraged the fellow to get a parking pass, but the process seemed too daunting for him. So she did it for him! Jill got the necessary letter, then went to the agency that hands out the passes (sparc bc[1]) and got one right away.

As Jill says, “We’re all a part of the community. We’re all here to help each other out — whether we have a disability or not. ”

60 Days of Giving ~ And more!

by Carol Broomhall | August 9, 2016 4:35 pm

For BACI’s 60th Anniversary, we wanted to give back to the people, businesses and organizations in our community who have supported us and shared our vision of “A society that includes all people.”  During the months of April and May, we encouraged our staff, the individuals and families we support, and other friends of BACI to join us in 60 Days of Giving.

We were amazed at how many wonderful stories of giving emerged. Won’t you join us in giving back to your friends, family, co-workers and community too?

Check out our Giving Tree page[1] for ideas of daily things to do, or visit our real Giving Tree at Still Creek Centre, 2702 Norland Avenue.

Keep us posted on what you’ve done! Leave a quick note at the Giving Tree, or Tweet it out via #BACIgives

by Carol Broomhall | March 3, 2016 7:41 pm

On March 2, 2016, a group of individuals and staff from BACI participated in a rally at the Metrotown Skytrain Station — one of 3 rallies held in Metro Vancouver focusing attention on the recent decision by the BC Government to claw back the cost of transportation from a small $77 increase in disability benefit rates.

More information on the the issue can be found here[1].

BACI is Not for Profit of the Year!

by Carol Broomhall | March 3, 2016 6:20 pm

BACI was thrilled to win the Not-for-Profit Organization of the Year Award at the 16th annual Burnaby Business Excellence Awards on November 5th, 2015.

Hosted by the Burnaby Board of Trade and the City of Burnaby, this award recognizes the “organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the Burnaby community and its citizens, and in doing so has made Burnaby a better place to live, work and play.”

At the Awards event, BACI Executive Director Tanya Sather thanked the BBOT for recognizing non-profits as a key part of the thriving Burnaby economy, and recognized the other nominees for the great work that they do. She also thanked Mayor Corrigan and the City of Burnaby for their Social Sustainability Plan and their Pillar of Inclusion that demonstrates their shared value “to create a society that includes all people.”

Tanya recognized BACI’s long-standing history and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, and the contributions of the many people who make BACI the great organization that it is – individuals, families, staff, Board members, and community partners.

For more details on the award, please see our media release[1].
